Glass Transition Temperatures In Binary Polymer Blends

چکیده
Knowledge of the glass transition temperatures (Tgs) as function of composition reflects miscibility (or lack of it) and is decisive for virtually all properties of polymer-based materials. In this article, we analyze single blend-average and effective Tgs of miscible polymer blends in full concentration ranges. Shortcomings of the extant equations are discussed to support the need for an alternative. Focusing on the deviation from a linear relationship, defined as DTg 1⁄4 Tg u1Tg,1 u2Tg,2 (where ui and Tg,i are, respectively, the weight fraction and the Tg of the i-th component), a recently proposed equation for the blend Tg as a function of composition is tested extensively. This equation is simple; a quadratic polynomial centered around 2u1 1 1⁄4 0 is defined to represent deviations from linearity, and up to three parameters are used. The number of parameters needed to describe the experimental data, along with their magnitude and sign, provide a measure of the system complexity. For most binary polymer systems tested, the results obtained with the new equation are better than those attained from existing Tg equations. The key parameter of the equation a0 is related to parameters commonly used to represent intersegmental interactions and miscibility in binary polymer blends. VC 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Glass transition of miscible binary polymer-polymer thin films.
The average glass transition temperatures, Tg, of thin homopolymer films exhibit a thickness dependence, Tg(h), associated with a confinement effect and with polymer-segment-interface interactions. The Tg's of completely miscible thin film blends of tetramethyl bisphenol-A polycarbonate (TMPC) and deuterated polystyrene (dPS), supported by SiO(x)/Si, decrease with decreasing h for PS weight fra...
متن کاملRelationship between the Glass Transition Temperature and the Interaction Parameter of Miscible Binary Polymer Blends
An equation that relates the g h transition temperature, TE, and a binary interaction parameter, x, for miscible binary polymer blends was derived. The equation including no adjustable parameters was based on a thermodynamic mixing formalism using enthalpy as the thermodynamic parameter. The enthalpy of mixing was written as a van Laar expression, and the T, was formally treated as a second-ord...
متن کاملInteractions of a liquid crystalline polymer with polycarbonate and poly(ethylene terephthalate)
Thermal behaviour of blends of a liquid crystalline copoly(ester amide) (Vectra B950) with two isotropic polymers has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry. One of the isotropic polymers is an amorphous polymer — polycarbonate, the other is a semi-crystalline polymer — poly(ethylene terephthalate). It was found that the glass transition temperature of polycarbonate decreases with in...
متن کاملA fullerene alloy based photovoltaic blend with a glass transition temperature above 200 °C
Organic solar cells with a high degree of thermal stability require bulk-heterojunction blends that feature a high glass transition, which must occur considerably above the temperatures encountered during device fabrication and operation. Here, we demonstrate for the first time a polymer : fullerene blend with a glass transition temperature above 200 C, which we determine by plasmonic nanospect...
متن کاملMorphology and Mechanical Properties Investigation of Binary Polymer Blends Based on PP/SEBS and PP/PC
In this study, eight binary blends of polypropylene (PP)/ poly [styrene-b-(ethylene-co butylene)-b-styrene] tri-block copolymer (SEBS) and polypropylene (PP)/ polycarbonate (PC) were produced at different composition through twin screw extruder. The composition of the minor phases was changed to correlate the morphology and mechanical properties of binary blends (PP/PC and PP/SEBS) through ther...
